Through rain, through sleet, through dark-of-night!
From Annapolis and Bowie to Crystal City/Pentagon - and back!
And the Washington Metro Smart Benefits Program can pay for it! (click here to see their webpage)
The Annapolis - Crystal City vanpool is probably the oldest operating vanpool in Maryland. We started as a carpool from Kent Island to Waterside Mall in DC with Rick Stevens in about 1979. We then formed one of the first vanpools as soon as they were authorized in Maryland, in the very early 1980's. We switched to Crystal City when our section of EPA moved there around 1982. The vanpool switched to the current owner about 1984. And we've been having fun ever since (and it's now 2008!) You haven't lived until you've enjoyed a vanpool.
Over the years, we've thoroughly researched optimum vehicles to use.
We've looked at:
But we finally settled on our current Ford van.
We take advantage of the compressed work program and most of us work 9 hour days so we can take one Friday off every two weeks. In order to beat the early traffic jam from Annapolis, we work 7am to 4:30pm, although we usually get to Crystal City about 6:30am to 6:45am.
We leave from Cape St Claire, near the Bay Bridge, pick up at Parole Plaza in Annapolis at 5:45am, then pick up at the Bowie Park & Ride at 6:00am. We drop people off at various locations in the Crystal City area.
We leave Crystal City at 4:30pm to return to Bowie and Annapolis. Most of our
riders currently are from DOD, and from the Environmental Protection
Agency.
