MASSA is a district of the Interscholastic Sailing Association, which coordinates secondary school sailing in the U.S. The Midatlantic district includes high school teams in New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. The district is organized into a league-based structure. There are currently 5 leagues (click here for information). A school will primarily sail in local regattas arranged by the leagues, who are responsible for selecting teams to attend MASSA District regattas. There will be MASSA Championship regattas each semester and there will be qualifier events to select district representatives to compete in the annual National Championships for single-handed (Cressy), double handed (Mallory), and team racing (three double-handed teams for the Baker). MASSA has a board of directors which includes the league directors (click here to see the current board members).

*The District single-handed qualifer to determine who will represent MASSA at the Cressy Singlehanded National Championships is scheduled for September 17 - 18 at the Brant Beach Yacht Club, NJ. Bring your own full or radial rig laser and register your school as an ISSA member.
Register for the regatta electronically on the Brant Beach Yacht Club Website (click here to register for the qualifier). The top 3 full rig and 3 radial rig sailors will qualify to attend the Cressy National Championship on October 29 - 30, 2010 in Chicago. Competitors check-in is at the Brant Beach Yacht Club at 8:00am on Saturday September 17th. Mandatory skipper's meeting at 9:00 with racing to follow. You may enter either the radial class or the full rig class for the qualifier, but you must have made that selection when you pre-registered. There is no limit on the number of entries per school. You must be a member of MASSA to participate and must be in the 9th grade, or above, of high school. Dues: (1) send the dues to MASSA in sufficient time for them to have been received before the regatta or (2) pay the school dues at the regatta prior to the skippers meeting. If the school was planning to pay the dues but they weren't received by MASSA prior to this regatta, (possibly because a school hasn't had time to issue a check), a competitor may still participate in the regatta by paying them directly to the district representative at the regatta and, if dues directly from the school are eventually received by MASSA, we will refund the original payment to the individual. But be sure that the ISSA website database has the school 2011-12 registration information entered into it (see Membership information at the top of this webpage).

**This regatta will also be used as a qualifier for the Atlantic Coast Championship at the Sailing Center Chesapeake, MD on Nov 12-13 and, if needed, as a Great Oaks qualifier.

The number of teams that each league can send to fleet and team racing district regattas are calculated based on each leagues's proportion of the total active racing teams as described in the MASSA rules. Each league will notify the MASSA director, and the league director of the league in which the regatta is to be held, of which teams will be attending by the Monday before each district regatta. If a league doesn't fill its quota, or teams have to cancel after the Monday deadline, the extra boats will be allocated to the district in which the regatta is held, since they are more likely to be able to attend at the last minute.

*** The Atlantic Coast Championship is a Fall Championship double handed fleet racing championship regatta for ISSA teams from the eastern US. The Districts eligible to participate include: MASSA, MWISA, NESSA, NWISA, PCISA, SAISA, and SEISA. Each district will select teams from those who want to attend this regatta. Allocations will be posted soon.

**** Great Oaks Regatta: signup procedures: (These will be posted once the NOR is available.) If you want to attend the ISSA Great Oaks regatta November 20-21 in New Orleans, first read the NORs and determine if you are eligible to send a team (one double handed boat per school with a maximum of 4 sailors and the school team must have been a continuous member of ISSA and have not qualified for the Mallory or Baker regattas in the past four years, or a school team that joins ISSA this year for the first time). Then signup for the regatta by following the instructions in the NOR to register directly with the Great Oaks regatta hosts. They will accept MASSA participants until the allocations for our district are filled.

***** Lawrence A. White Trophy, High School Open Fall Regatta at the Coast Guard Academy. MASSA has been allocated 5 teams to attend. This is a standard 2 fleet doublehand fleet racing regatta. Teams that want to attend may signup by email by September 16 as described in the NOR. If more than 5 MASSA teams have signed up by then, a lottery will be used to select the attendees.

Schedules/information for the leagues may be found through the league links in the menu to the left or by clicking here on each league name: Northwest League, Northeast League, East League, Central League, and Southern League.

FALL 2011 RESULTS:

The 2011 MASSA Cressy Qualifier regatta was held at Brant Beach Yacht Club on September 17th & 18th. The thirty-seven Radials and sixteen Lasers sailed in the two day event in a variety of wind conditions. Saturday morning was overcast with a solid NE 10-15 knot breeze. The wind held steady for the first five races of the day then dropped out to 5-8 knots for the next several races. The wind quickly built for the final race of the day when it began to rain and PRO sent the radials in with nine races completed, and the lasers with ten races completed. On Saturday night The Friends of Southern Sailing parents and the Southern Regional HS sailing team had prepared a hot pasta dinner that was enjoyed by many of the sailors.
On Sunday morning the sailors were met with a 20–25 knot NE breeze. As the top sailors in both fleets were very close in points, the Regatta Chair, Scot Ellis and PRO, Eric Reitinger made the decision to complete the regatta. The fleets launched at 10am and completed the remaining races. Many thanks need to go out to the race committee and patrol boats who were on station for Sunday’s challenging conditions.
At the end of the regatta there was very tight competition in both fleets. Congratulations to radial sailors Andrew Puopolo who finished with twenty-eight points, Matthew Schofield with fourty points and Gary Prieto who finished the regatta with three bullets on Sunday morning to move into third place. The Laser fleet was just as tight at the top. Daniel DelBello finished on top, followed to Joe Paggi and Colin Kennedy. Congratulations to all the sailors and good luck to those that will be moving on to Chicago. You can see the full results by clicking here: Full Results for the 2011 MASSA Cressy Qualifier.

The 2011 Fall MASSA District Fleet Racing Championship was held at the Stony Brook School on Long Island in Norfolk on October 22 and 23. More information, full results, and photographs will be added to the website soon. The overall top were: 1. Severn School, 2. Norfolk Collegiate School, 3. Mamaroneck, 4. Toms River South, and Archbishop Spalding.

The 2011 Fall MASSA District Team Racing Championship was held at Annapolis Yacht Club and Severn Sailing Association on November 5th & 6th. Just over 100 races were completed on 2 race courses Saturday and Sunday. Initial seeded rounds of 8 and 7 teams were completed and teams were re-sorted into Gold and Silver Fleets. The Gold fleet finished a full round, which resulted in a 4-way tie for 1st – necessitating a sail off. The Silver round was 1 race short of completing their round. The race officials and volunteers, especially the SSA PRO John Howell, and AYC PRO Peter Gordon, did a great job in running this regatta and handling the changing wind conditions: Saturday: NE 12-18kts dying to 5-8, and Sunday: N at max 5kts dying and eventually shifting to SE at 5. The results from the final 4 sail off were: 1st: Mamaroneck High School who went undefeated, 2nd: Archbishop Spalding, 3rd: Mercy McQuaid, and 4th: Severn School. The full results can be seen by clicking here: Full Results for the 2011 Fall MASSA District Team Racing Championship.

The 2011 Atlantic Coast Championship was held at the Sailing Center Chesapeake on November 12-13, 2011. The Norfolk Collegiate School mastered the shifty conditions to pull off a 16 point win against 16 other high schools. Teams traveled from as far as Maine and Florida to complete at the Sailing Center Chesapeake, a new community boating outlet located in Southern Maryland.
A light southwesterly greeted the sailors on Saturday morning. The breeze slowly built all day long on Herring Creek until it was 10-12 knots at the end of the day. Sunday saw the same direction and more wind that gradually shifted into the west by the last race.
Senior I. Stokes of Norfolk Collegiate beat C. Lalumiere of Falmouth High School from Maine by 4 points to take A Division. G. Hobbs from Tampa Jesuit topped B Division with 9 points over M. White of Severn. Severn provided some great drama in the final two races with finishes of 3, 2, 2, and 1. But this was not enough to overcome the substantial lead that Norfolk Collegiate enjoyed through most of the event. Both of these teams dealt with the shifty and puffy conditions very well. Overall Results 1. Norfolk Collegiate, 2. Severn School, & 3. Toms River South. The full results can be seen by clicking here: Full Results for the 2011 Atlantic Coast Championship.

SPRING 2011 RESULTS:

The 2011 Baker National Team Racing Championship was hosted and organized by Randy Stokes of MASSA. It was held at the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club on May 20 - 21, 2011. He was chairman of the event and recruited an excellent group of officials and umpires, including PRO, Gary Bodie, Chief Umpire, Rob Overton, and Scorer Tim Spracher. Despite a period of light air on both days, they completed 66 races . MASSA was represented by Norfolk Collegiate and Annapolis. A full regatta report and pictures are posted on the ISSA website and can be seen by clicking here: 2011 Baker National Championship report.

The 2011 Spring MASSA District Fleet Racing Championship and Mallory National Qualifier was scheduled to be hosted April 9 & 10 by the Coast Guard Academy as arranged with head coach, Doug Clark. However, because of the congressional inability to agree on funding the government, Coast Guard might not have been able to host it, so it was switched on April 7th to Severn Sailing Association and Annapolis Yacht Club, who, amazingly, were able to organize the regatta at the very last minute due to the efforts of the SSA junior program director and MASSA Central League director, Joel Labuzetta. Amy Gross-Kehoe volunteered to run the race committee and did a great job dealing with a Saturday with very light winds and did manage to complete several well-sailed races by the end of the day. The winds were slower to pick up on Sunday than predicted but eventually filled in as the day warmed up, and 13 races were completed in each division. The top four teams that qualified to attend the National Mallory Championship in Austin, Texas, were 1. Christchurch School, in Christchurch, Virginia , 2. Severn School, Severna Park, Maryland, 3. Annapolis High School, Annapolis, Maryland, and 4. Rumson-Fairhaven Regional High School, in Rumson, New Jersey. The 2010 Fall Atlantic Coast Championship was held at the Toms River Yacht Club & Ocean County College, November 13-14, as organized by Brian Hull, the MASSA East League Director. Saturday: Beautiful sunny day in Toms River, New Jersey with the temperatures in the mid-60s. The wind came out of the NNE ranging from 6-12 mph which gave the sailors a variety of shifty and challenging conditions on the Toms River. Christchurch of Virginia/MASSA jumped out to a quick lead on the first day of ACCs. Saturday ended with some extremely tired sailors and A-Division having finished 10 races.
Sunday: B-Division started with race 9B where the fleet experienced light winds for most of the morning. During race 10B, the race committee postponed the event due to no wind. Around 11:30, the wind finally came in for the rest of the event. Congratulations to Falmouth High School of Maine who finished third, Norfolk Collegiate of Virginia who placed second and to Christchurch for winning 2010 Atlantic Coast Championship. The 2010 Spring MASSA District Team Racing Championship and Baker National Qualifier was held on the Severn River by the Annapolis Yacht Club and the Severn River Sailing Association on April 24th and 25th. Teams were initially seeded and split into two even groups, competing in either AYC or SSA 420s on the same course. Races were postponed Saturday morning due to no wind. Light and variable winds in the early afternoon made racing possible, but kept the race committee busy with constant course adjustments. 30 races were completed to finish the first 2 seeded rounds of racing. Teams were placed into Gold and Silver fleets based on these results. Racing was again postponed Sunday morning due to no wind. The breeze eventually filled, but was light and variable. The silver round was cancelled after only 3 races in order to facilitate finishing the gold round. The wind settled to 5-7 kts from the NE for the second half of the gold round. 1 sail-off was held to break a tie for 4th, and another at the end of the final four to break a tie for 1st. Thanks very much to the race committee, with PRO Jay Kehoe, for running great races despite the very challenging conditions. Also thanks to the umpires who volunteered their weekends for this event, including chief umpires Liz Hall and Jonathan Bartlett. One protest was heard on shore, resulting in one DSQ. Also thanks to the Eastport Yacht Club for offering their facilities and docks for rotations and spectating. The event was broadcast live by connect757.com and sailgroove.com.

Severn School from Severn Park, Maryland, won the regatta, and Broadneck High School from Annapolis, Maryland, finished second. They both qualified to attend the Baker National Championships in Seattle, Washington.
The results for the rest of the participating teams that had qualified from their leagues to attend were: 3. Annapolis High School, 4. Christchurch, 5. Norfolk collegiate, 6. Toms River South, 7. Monsignor Donovan, 8. Rye Country Day School, 9. Point Pleasant Beach, 10. Archbishop Spalding, 11. Mercy/Mcquaid, and 12. Key School. PRO Steve Wilde was able to get in 9 races in each class on Saturday. Winds were out of the south with speeds of 15-20 and gusts up to 25. Sunday’s winds were lighter, 8-12, but died after the Full Rigs finished their 11th race and leaving the Radials drifting. PRO Wilde smartly abandoned the Radial’s 11th race. Winds would not return and racing was ended around noon. The top 3 finishers in the radial rig class qualified to attend the Cressy National Championships and they were: 1. Daniel DelBello, Fox Lane High, NY 2. Jack Swikart, Rumson Fairhaven , NJ, and 3. Max Lopez, Middletown High South, NJ. Alternatives, if the top 3 could not attend the nationals, were 4. The 2009 Fall MASSA District Team Racing Championship was held at St Marys College of Maryland, on November 14th and 15th in 1 week old LaserPerformance FJ's. Eight teams from all four leagues on MASSA sailed in the event. Three complete round robins were sailed over two days, a great format for this event. A total of 84 races were sailed in the triple round robin format. Saturday saw ample winds of 10 to 18 from the north and northwest trailing off into the late afternoon causing the last race of the day to be abandoned as dark and calm descended. After a short wait for the inversion to break on Sunday morning, racing resumed in a light westerly, and the last round robin ended at 1 PM. The races were ably run by the St. Mary's varsity sailing team. Umpires were recruited from local judges and sailors, some recent college sailing graduates, and additional St. Mary's varsity team members. Norfolk Collegiate won followed by Severn School which was tied on wins and losses with Christ Church but had won two of the three head-on-head matches. The full results were:1. Norfolk Collegiate 18-3, 2. Severn School 16-5 (winning tie break head to head), 3. Christ Church 16-5, 4. Broadneck 12-9, 5. Toms River South 9-12 (winning tie break head to head), 6. Spring 2009 Results:

The 2009 Spring MASSA District Fleet Racing Championship and Mallory National Qualifier was hosted by the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York on April 18th and 19th. There were very good sailing conditions with moderate breezes, moderate temperatures, and fairly constant wind directions. To allow a maximum number of races, rotations and coaching took place on the water on a very nice large boat, and 18 races were completed in each division. The academy, especially Matt Allen and Rick Dominique, organized and supervised a well-run regatta and their large Yocum Sailing Center provided a fine venue for meetings, spectators, and the post race MASSA membership meeting on Saturday. 20 District schools were qualified to attend this regatta by their leagues. Norfolk Collegiate was well ahead of the other teams until the final two races when Christchurch edged ahead of them. For the first half of the regatta, Broadneck and Severn traded places but Severn moved ahead after that to finish third. The top 6 teams were: 1. Christchurch, Southern League, 2. Norfolk Collegiate, Southern League 3. Severn School, Central League, 4. Broadneck High, Central League, 5. Annapolis High, Central League, and 6. Archbishop Spalding, Central League. The 2009 Spring MASSA District Team Racing Championship and Baker National Qualifier was held on the Lafayette River at Norfolk Yacht and Country Club and the Elizabeth River at Old Dominion University.
Racing began on Saturday, April 25, 2009 with seeded qualifying rounds held at both venues: the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club and Old Dominion University. Shortly after midday the four top teams from each venue met at NYCC for the championship rounds and the remaining teams met at Old Dominion University for the consolation rounds. At that point, Norfolk Collegiate and Severn School were both undefeated. The Championship Rounds continued through late Saturday afternoon and Sunday.

The 2008 Fall MASSA District Fleet Racing Championship was held at Annapolis Yacht Club on November 1st. 18 District schools were qualified to attend this regatta by their leagues. There were early concerns that there would not be enough wind. Fortunately, the winds filled in from the southwest by late morning so that 5 races were completed in each division. The new AYC Waterfront Director, Jay Kehoe, and the 420/High School coach Mattie Farrar did a fine job in organizing and efficiently completing the regatta and Severn Sailing Association provided a good viewing and coaching site from their seawall. The top 6 teams were: 1. Christchurch, Southern League, 2. Archbishop Spalding, Central League, 3. Severn School, Central League, 4. Rumson/Fairhaven, Northeast League, 5. Broadneck High, Central League, and 6. Norfolk Collegiate, Southern League. The full results can be seen by clicking here: Full Results for the 2008 Fall MASSA District Fleet Racing Championship.

The 2008 Fall MASSA District Team Racing Championship was held at St Marys College of Maryland by head varsity coach Adam Werblow. The Fall Team Racing Championship was held at St Mary’s College in their new Sailing Center featuring a well appreciated viewing deck and fireplace indoors. Despite light breezes and a fair bit of rain, the event was nice. There were eight umpires that were a mix of ages and experience including three college undergraduates and a newer judge learning from the pros: Barbara Herbig (Chief Umpire), Stovy Brown, & Rob Rowlands. 24 races were completed. Unfortunately, the regatta needed 28 races to complete the round robin. There was a shore side postponement mid-day and then the breeze was lost all together at 3:45 and the racing was called off.
In accordance with the posted Sailing Instructions, although a full round robin was not sailed, the best course of action was determined to be an analysis of races sailed, which revealed that whatever happened in the remaining races, the first five places would not change.  Therefore, the regatta was declared as complete. First, second, and third trophies were awarded based on this reasoning: 1. Norfolk Collegiate, Southern League , 2. Severn School, Central League, 3. Christchurch, Southern League, 4. Annapolis High, Central League, and 5. Monsignor Donovan, Northeast League. The remaining three participating teams were Pittsford, Northwest League, St. Anthony's, Northeast League, and Toms River South, Northeast League.
