MASSA Board of Directors

The Midatlantic Scholastic Sailing Association district has a very similar structure to the Interscholastic Sailing Association, of which it is a member. Both ISSA and MASSA are administered by a Board of Directors.

The MASSA Board of Directors (BOD), as specified in the current bylaws, has two elected officers, a Director, and an Assistant Director. The MASSA BOD consists of these two MASSA directors, the League Directors (which are elected by their leagues), and at-large members, which are selected by the board to provide assistance to MASSA. MASSA is represented on the ISSA BOD by the MASSA District Director and a second representative, currently Randy Stokes, that is selected by the district.

The Current 2011 members of the MASSA Board of Directors are:

1. District Director: William R. Schneider, Ph.D
Bio: Bill lives in Annapolis and is a senior scientist (microbiologist) for the EPA biopesticide program. His junior sailing administration experience began in 1987 with being the second member of the United States Optimist Board of Directors that lived north of Florida. He then started high school sailing programs in 1990 at Broadneck High and Severn School in Annapolis. About 1993 he took over as director of MASSA. He programmed the first ISSA website (for MASSA) in 1995 and has been maintaining and updating it every since.

2. Assistant District Director: George Stovy Brown
Stovy has been instrumental in building junior sailing in the central Maryland area and most recently has developed the Sailing Center Chesapeake. He also formed and developed the MASSA Central League. He is a US Sailing judge and has been very helpful in handling issues with the rules for MASSA. He is an original member of the MASSA BOD and prior to 2011, he has been the Director of Sailing for MASSA.

3. Treasurer / Secretary: Geoffrey Schneider
Bio: Geoff lives in Annapolis and is a junior sailing program instructor. He is also an experienced computer technician. His junior sailing experience began in the first Optimists north of Florida in the 1980's. He then moved to the International 420's and qualified to be on the US team. He also was the lead skipper for the first Broadneck High sailing team in Annapolis. He previously has been the MASSA Assistant Director. He has access to the MASSA website programming if necessary.

4. Co-Directors of Sailing: Amy Gross-Kehoe & Jill Shore Petrone
The Director of Sailing positions were given to Amy and Jill at the 12/22/2010 MASSA BOD meeting. Both Amy (currently sailing coach at Gunston School) and Jill (Currently sailing coach at Christchurch) have many years of regatta organization experience.

5. Southern League Director: Randy Stokes
Randy is from Norfolk, Virginia. He is also a legal expert and is helpful in those areas. He developed and built up the VISA junior sailing program in Virginia and later developed the MASSA Southern League. He is an original member of the MASSA BOD. He also has been elected as the 2nd MASSA Representative to the ISSA BOD

6. Central League Director: Joel Labuzetta
Joel is the junior sailing director for Severn Sailing Association program and was elected the Central League Director beginning in 2009.

7. Northeast League Director: George Linzee
George is a marine biology instructor at the Stony Brook School on Long Island and he also is in charge of their extensive sailing program. He has been an at-large member of the national ISSA BOD since 2002. He is an original member of the MASSA BOD, and developed the MASSA Northeast League.

8. Northwest League Director: Jon Faudree
Jon has been a high school sailing coach in New England and is very familar with the New England district of ISSA. He now is the Youth Sailing Director for the Rochester Yacht Club. He replaced Jason Evans in 2008 at Rochester Yacht Club and has been working on building the Northwest High School sailing program.

9. East League Director: Brian Hull
Brian Hull has been involved with junior (and high school) sailing for many years in New Jersey and coached high school teams for at least the past 10 years. He replaced Mike Spark as the member-at-large from New Jersey in 2009 when Mike retired from sailing. The Northeast League was split into two leagues (Northeast and East) in 2010 to allow for more localized sailing in the New Jersey area and the Long Island area.

10. Member at Large: Scott Ellis
Scott is the rear commodore for the Brant Beach Yacht Club in New Jersey and has been instrumental in organizing their high school sailing.

11. Advisor and "Esteemed Friend of the Board": Andrew Cole
Andrew lives in Annapolis and started sailing in Florida as a junior Optimist sailor and has continued sailing to the present. He is employed in the legal field and is also a sailing judge. He is an advisor to the ISSA national BOD and has been very helpful in their development of new bylaws, etc. We are fortunate to have him available to help us too, as needed.
