Severn won the Mallory National Fleet Racing High School Sailing Championship. Severn School sails from their own facility. Broadneck (sailing from Severn Sailing Association) was 5th and Annapolis High (sailing from Annapolis Yacht Club) was 14th out of the 20 high schools who qualified from nationwide high school sailing districts. This is the first time an Annapolis area high school has won the national high school doublehanded championship since 1982, when Annapolis High School won. Broadneck's 5th place is their best since their 8th place finish in 1991. Severn was in third place prior to the last two races but finished well in them and also won a protest against Newport Harbor that moved them into first place. The sailing in the Severn off the Naval Academy featured chilly weather but great consistent winds for sailing with lighter windspeed at times on Saturday, but in a consistant direction down the river, building to challenging winds with waves later on Sunday which held a consistant direction up the river from the bay. A full round of 20 races were completed ahead of schedule by the very talented sailors representing some of the best high school sailors in the United States. On the water umpiring by judges Andrew Cole of Annapolis and Stovy Brown of Solomons Island contributed to efficiently completing the races and the Navy sailing program, under the direction of John Vandemoer, Navy Head Sailing Coach, organized and ran the excellent race series with no problems. As a trial, all the boats had a GPS locator system that was used to produce an aerial display of each race which will be posted on the www.kattack.com website or click here to go to the webpage where the program is posted.
