2005 RACING RESULTS:

Cherry Blossom 2005 April 30th

It was not the nicest weather we've ever seen for the Cherry Blossom - cold and rainy - but the winds were nice: bordering between sitting in the boat or on the rail and generally came from the direction of the Jefferson Memorial. We had a couple of new people this year, Todd Lochner, the current Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association president, borrowed Bob Putnam's boat, and Nancy Haberland, who is a Naval Academy sailing coach, and whose last major regatta was in the Yngling class at last year's Olympics! (see http://www.ussailing.org/olympics/OlympicGames/2004/Yngling/NancyHaberland.asp) Of course, sailing in the Olympics doesn't necessarily make her an El toro winner, but it didn't hurt that she had sailed toros when she was younger (and some of us even remembered her). Jim Ayres handled registration. Steve Swenson ran the races and laid out some nice long port triangles for us. Nancy remembered how to sail the toro after all and finished first in 2 races, but Brian Taliaferro was close behind (and ahead some of the time) and beat Nancy in the first race and was second in the others for a very respectable second overall. Jacelyn Ayres Swenson was third, including an amazing recovery from a capsize at the finish line (she verified that the water, indeed was cold). Overall: 1. Nancy Haberland, 2. Brian Taliaferro, 3. Jacelyn Swenson, 4. Bill Schneider, 5. Dave Littleton, 6. Val Taliaferro, 7. Todd Lochner, 8. Hank Muma, 9. Chisolm McAvoy, and 10. Kyle Swenson.

Tuckahoe Spring Regatta, June 11th

Tom & Carol Jones again hosted a fun regatta at their home on the Tuckahoe River. The long distance course, upstream and back downstream, was used. The tactical choices in this course involve guessing how close you can get to the reeds on the banks without running aground or losing the wind, and which side of the islands are favored for the particular wind direction. This year, it appears that Geoff guessed right but was closely followed by Hank and Val. Overall: Geoff Schneider, 2. Hank Muma, 3. Val Taliaferro, 4. David Littleton, 5. Brian Taliaferro, 6. Carol Jones, and 7. Chisolm McAvoy.

The Rogers Regatta on the Corsica River, June 25th

The 2nd Annual El Toro Invitational was held at Ship Point next to Emory Creek on the Corsica River. Bill & Val arrived the night before and anchored out on Nightingale and Freeflight. (Brian & Geoff drove to meet us and brought the toros). The Rogers family served as CRYC hosts for the event. Chris performed RC duties, Reed served a delightful picnic of homemade chicken sandwiches and potato salad, and James acted as Patrol boat. The weather was perfect, with good wind and bright sunshine. Best of all, temperatures remained moderate, especially under the tent. Some of the windshifts added a few challenges to our planning and catching an occasional powerboat wake usually paid off. the Rogers made some really neat trophies - some wooden El toro models! Final results: 1. Geoff Schneider, 2. Brian Taliaferro, 3. Bill Schneider, 4. Val Taliaferro, 5. Tom Jones, 6. Hank Muma, 7. Dave Littleton, 8. Carol Jones, and 9. Chisolm McAvoy.

CBYRA Race Week one design regatta, July 5th & 6th.

The inaugural CBYRA "Midsummers Night Dream" regatta for one designs was held in the evening out of Annapolis. The toro race course was very conveniently just off of Severn Sailing Association. It was a perfect event for toros: nice weather, moderate breeze, and short courses. The awards at Easport Yacht Club featured some very nice trophies: brass compasses. The final standings were: 1. Bill Schneider, 2. Geoff Schneider, 3. Brian Taliaferro, 4. David Littleton, 5. Val Taliaferro, and 6. Karl Schneider.

Cambridge Annual Regatta/Atlantic Coast Championship, July 9th

The race committee got 5 races off for Lasers, Penguins, and Toros on our course near the clubhouse (the other classes sailed on the other side of the Choptank river). Good sailing, good food, and good fun - as usual for this event. The breeze piped up prior to the last 2 races and several were concerned that we might be getting to the point where toros turn into submarines, but, fortunately, the breeze dropped off a bit. Final standings: 1. Brian Taliaferro, 2. Bill Schneider, 3. Hank Muma, 4. Reed Rogers, 5. Chisolm McAvoy, 6. Val Taliaferro, 7. David Littleton, 8. Tom Jones, and 9. Carol Jones.

Presidents's/Leukemia Cup Regatta, September 11th

This year's President's cup regatta at the Washington Sailing Marina was sailed on a day with very nice weather. It was sunny, but not too hot, and the humidity was relatively low. However, there was not much wind. The race committee tried its best to set windward courses but but the breeze, such as it was, was not cooperative. Even the occasional whirlwind from the jets landing close overhead at National Airport didn't help the speed of our drifting. It seemed like a very long day before we completed some races - and not everyone managed to complete the last race, but fortunately, we all managed to get back to the dock (eventually), which was the big challenge of the day (a committee boat did offer a tow, but most of us elected to take the sailing challenge). The scoring presented another challenge to the race committee because of the several ties, but they used Appendix A of the rules to resolve all the ties. This says that the finish position in the final race of the series is used to break a tie. Also, they dropped the lowest score as specified in the rule (since the racing instructions didn't specify an alternative to this.) Final Results: 1. Brian Taliaferro (tied with:) 2. Bill Schneider, 3. Val Taliaferro (tied with:) 4. Geoff Schneider, 5. Tom Jones (tied with:) 6. Hank Muma, 7. Carol Jones, 8. McCartney, and 9. Chisolm McAvoy.
