Raftup Reports for 2011: Memorial Day Weekend - Dividing Creek (May 27-31, 2011)
Dennis Lawrence cruised up the Bay in Thate Wata on the way back from a winter in the Bahamas and was the first to arrive in Dividing Creek. Rick & Chris obeyed One With The Wind's demand to stop in Solomons on their way back from the Bahamas and they arrived in Dividing Creek shortly afterwards. Freeflight wasn't feeling well at the last minute and didn't make the raftup this year after all. However, Nightingale (having to make such a long trip from the Magothy River) arrived on Sunday and we all had a couple of days together to try to cure Thate Wata & One With The Wind of their southern addiction. We revived a long time Bayfarer tradition of having a wine and cheese party on Memorial Day weekend and then indulged in a Swiss cheese fondue the following day. Instead of the usual domino games, we tried out, and enjoyed, a game introduced by Rick & Chris called Farkle, played with six dice. The rules can be found on the internet, just search for Farkle, although there are variations in the rules posted in different places. We just did what Chris said to do (Rick's been doing that forever, of course ;-). The key is that, if when it's your turn to roll the dice, you don't get any scoring combination, then you get no points for that turn, which is called a "Farkle". It's easy to learn, Bill Schneider had never played it before but he won the first game. But, then in the following games, he Farkled too much and lost those. As I write this up, it appears from the scores of all the games, that Dennis was the overall winner, followed by Rick. Everyone else tied for last place - really! But we all had fun. The weather was very hot but there was a nice breeze for the first several days that made it quite comfortable. However, on Memorial Day, there was no breeze and the temperatures were in the high 90's! Despite this Sue & Chris did some kayaking - and we had some turkeys flying back & forth over the creek. We also caught just a glimpse of a magnitude -6 Iridium Flare on Memorial Day evening through the trees. All told, we had a great time getting together again and plan to do it again, one way or another.

July 4th Fireworks (July 4, 2011)
We didn't anchor off the Gibson Island fireworks as planned since we had a last minute contact with our friends who own Baltimore Lighthouse (and had learned to sail on Nightingale as part of the racing crew). They invited us out to Baltimore Lighthouse to see the fireworks so several of us went out there. The view was great and we could see fireworks from Baltimore, Gibson Island, Annapolis, and across the bay.
|
Octoberfest (October 2, 2011)
Only Jerry, Roanna, Sue & Bill made it out to this event at the Old Stein Inn, but we had a great time on the last official day of Octoberfest. Ein, zwei, g'suffa! Heidi & the Heimat Echo band was great entertainment and Bill got a special award for playing on their alpenhorn.
|
Octoberfest (belated) (October 21, 2011)
Well, we had fun the first time, so we had to do it again. The weather during the previous several weeks wasn't too conducive to getting anyone together on the water, so the cars from One With the Wind, Nightingale, Catnip, and Tim & Sandy Lynch (from the early Bayfarer days who don't have a boat anymore) rafted up at the Old Stein Inn on Central Avenue in Edgewater for a great time. However, we couldn't talk Andy into playing the alpenhorn, although we're sure he would have excelled at it. A great time was had by all.

Winter Raftup in Florida (December, 2011, & January, 2012)
When Felix the Cat was in Ft Lauderdale, Dave & Chris O'Neil borrowed Brook's motorcycle and zipped up to see Ron & Nancy Glenn at their condo in Jupiter. Bill & Sue, after their island trip (they cheated and were on a cruise ship) also visited Ron & Nancy after their ship got back to Ft Lauderdale in January. The view from Ron & Nancy's livingroom made us feel like we were anchored just off the coast, so this definitely felt like a raftup.

Raftup Reports for 2010: Memorial Day Weekend - Dividing Creek (May 29-31,2010)
Nightingale arrived first to a surprisingly empty Dividing Creek and hogged some prime space to port off the entrance and was met by One With The Wind shortly afterwards. Freeflight completed the raftup for the first evening of gourmet gorging, dominant dominoing, and conversational consultations. The next morning we were captured by Catnip as Andy & Joyce appeared, having escaped from a nearby Cat Convention. Needless to say, we all had a great time in the great weather with only one drawback to our location. Our location was a bit exposed to the large wakes rolling in from powerboaters on the river and we occasionally had to stop what we were doing and hold the boats off each other - but that was part of our fun. Next time we should probably try for the starboard cove on Dividing Creek. Unfortunately this great weather didn't continue for the remainder of the scorching summer.
|
Octoberfest Prelude (Sept 28, 2010)
Bayfarers rafted their cars up at the Old Stein Inn on Central Avenue in Edgewater for an evening of conversation, pilsners, food, prosts, and even an alpenhorn blowing contest in the biergarten with Heidi & the Heimat Echo band. Bill won a t-shirt for his rendition of Too Fat Polka and the Howdy Doody song on the alpenhorn. The band had some great traditional polkas and played the Pennsylvania Polka for Rick & Chris (& Val & Jane, too), although, later, no one danced for the Chicken Dance - well, we did it while sitting down. A highlight of the evening was when Rick got a phone call from cruising friends he meet on the intercoastal (& elsewhere). He told them how to get to our automobile raftup and Dolores & Neil Murphy arrived a bit later to liven up the conversations. They cruised a lot in their (large) sailboat but moved to a trawler later. However, now they are looking for a sailboat again. They live in Easton. A lot of the conversations involved all the boat fixing going on - One With the Wind is still hauled out getting an extensive rejuvenation and Freeflight is undergoing some mast rigging surgery etc., etc. Those holes in the water are being well funded these days.

Labor Day Weekend (Sept 4 - 6, 2010)
Hurricane Earl cooperated with us and didn't join the raftup. Instead he sailed up the coast to the delight of the Ocean City surfers. Saturday morning Nightingale left the Magothy heading for Fairlee Creek in a spirited breeze - plenty for jib alone. The breeze picked up, gusting to 30 or so from the west with waves rolling it for a bouncy experience - we even saw 9 knots once on the meter. The entrance to Fairlee hasn't changed from the old days when we occasionally visited it. Head for the beach and sail (actually motor) along it around into the creek. The creek had many (an underestimate at best) motorboats with some rafts of 20 or more. However, there was room for us and a bit later Felix the (45foot) cat arrived to raft with us. It was great weather, a good breeze on Saturday for Dave fix up his windsurfer rig and scoot around the creek, but not enough breeze for rafts to drag. Most of the Cape St Claire Yacht Club sailors arrived on Sunday in more moderate breezes and we got together with them a bit. We pigged out of course, played Dominos, walked the beach scouting for weathered glass, and even spent some time at the Tiki Bar where we enjoyed a (censored) cocktail and a rock band. Dave & Chris had a new set of dominos, but didn't have coins handy to place on the trains to show those that were open for others to play on. However, we discovered a fine way to mark those trains: if you didn't have anything to play on, then you would put an M&M on your train. When you managed to finally play on it, you got to eat that M&M! Had a nice trip home on Monday, but the Northern Bay was crammed full of crab pots you constantly had to watch out for.
|
The Halloween Hoot! (October 30-31)
Nightingale had Murphy's wind law operating Halloween weekend since the wind changed direction on Saturday and Sunday resulting in around 15 knots right on the nose each day. However, the raftup wasn't far away (in Mill Creek off Whitehaul Bay) so it wasn't really a problem. We found a nice raftup spot just around the bend past Cantler's which blocked much of the chilly wind. It was rather nippy on Saturday, but Freeflight had her dodger up blocking the wind which allowed the sun to nicely warm up the party. The usually halloween decorations were up but we didn't get any trick or treaters stopping by - but that left lots of stuff for us to eat. The evening dominos competition was interesting. The initial games before 11pm were won by everyone but Jane. She just couldn't seem to get the best dominos. So, we gave her a pep talk which must have provided some inspiration. Jane won all of the last 5 games, some of which seemed to go on forever with everyone almost depleting the boneyard (afterall, it was Halloween weekend). Therefore, Jane is now officially the Bayfarer Domino Queen of Halloween!

Raftup Reports for 2009: Memorial Day Weekend - Dividing Creek (May 23-25, 2009)
Dennis and Suzi Lawrence (dogged by Maggie & Murphy) arrived from their new home in North Carolina on Thursday and reserved a very nice cove on Dividing Creek for the Bayfarers. Rick & Chris Emersen arrived at the same time (since they were also on Thata Wata). Nightingale brought Bill & Sue Schneider by on Saturday, followed by Freeflight with Val & Jane Taliaferro. This is all the boats we were definitely expecting but then it developed into one of the largest gatherings we've had in a long time. Dave & Chris O'Neill (dogged by Bequia)in Felix the cat anchored nearby and then Dennis & Susi Lengyel stopped by for a visit. Gunther & Barbara Nehrkorn (Tseunami) also rafted nearby with Gordon on Impulse. Then Andy & Joyce Stefancik (Catnip) tied up to Freeflight and Felix was joined by Daze Off (Mike & Kathy Anderson), followed by Chalet and Patricia. Chris O'Neil painted a very nice picture of the Thate Wata raftup that afternoon. The Dominos game on Saturday night was dominated by Chris Emersen, the big weener, who therefore qualified for this year's impromptu Day of Absurdity award. She let some others win a few games, but not many. And definitely, the port side was doing better. The starboarders only won one game. Throughout the weekend we kept looking for the fox that the Thata Watans had seen trotting down the beach on Wye Island on Friday, but I guess we were partying too hard and making too much noise. Sunday evening we all joined the party on Felix's large outdoor patio. And a great time was had by all. We lucked out with the weather, the forcasts were for showers and thunderstorms in the afternoons, but we had no percipitation at all on the weekend, although those of us who left fairly early on Monday morning probably made the right decision since there were scattered thunderstorms and rain late in the afternoon.

July Jubilee raftup (July 24 - 26, 2009)
Nightingale & Freeflight met up in Eagles cove on the North end of Gibson Island on the Magothy for Friday. We sat back and did as little as possible, having a fine relaxed time - even the waterskier didn't bother us. On Saturday we moved down to the end of Ridout Creek off Whitehall Creek on the north side of the Severn. We originally were going to Queenstown Creek but were a bit wary of the weather forecast for Sunday coming back, especially considering how generally lousy the weather has been for sailing so far this year. We were joined by Rick & Chris Emerson, who were still renovating One With The Wind (they drove One Without The Wind across the Bay Bridge to get there). Again, a nice relaxing enjoyable anchorage and raftup.

Labor Day Weekend (Sept 5 - 7, 2009)
San Domingo Creek for the second Labor Day in a row! Dave & Chris O'Neil (on Felix the Cat) put down their hook in San Domingo Creek off the Choptank for the Labor Day Weekend. We were joined by Bayfarers Bill & Sue Schneider on Nightingale, Mike & Kathy Anderson on Daze Off, Val & Jane Taliferro on Free Flight, and Rick & Chris Emerson on One with the Wind, just recently changed back from being a powerboat now that their mast work was finished. A second raft nearby were some of Chris & Dave's friends that were also at the Memorial Day raftups, i.e. Bob & Patti Bartlett on Patricia, Ed & Eileen Mowle on Chalet, & Sue & Jim on Miss Marie. We all got together on and off all weekend - dinghying, swimming,(& walking) between boats. There was absolutely great weather, clear skies with some spectacular sunsets & full moonrises. Chris & Dave were definitely crabby over the weekend but cooked their crab pot catches up for everyone to snack on. Some of us dinghyed into the backdoor dock to St Michaels where they enjoyed the sampling at the Eastern Shore Brewery and the St. Michaels Winery (on the right and left of the short road into town). We had a couple of ladies events. the first was a kayak expedition paddling around and around to the nearby islands, etc. Chris O'Neill was in an especially party mode and put on an evening Momma Mia ladies' dance session on the (large) foredeck of Felix the Cat. Felix sure has some dynamic speakers for the bouncy music. Rick Emerson was a bit concerned about the long fetch where we were anchored off the Hambleton Islands but we really didn't bounce around much, but, of course, Murphy's Law did bring in one extremely large wake (tidal wave?) from an enormous stink boat that actually exploded one of Val & Jane's fenders with a loud bang. Fortunately, there was no boat damage, but at least now Rick could say "I told you so". We never did get around to playing any Dominos, but didn't miss it because of all the snacking, food, and great fun b.s./party conversations. (Bill Schneider's speciality - B.S. - get it?).

Raftup Reports for 2008: Memorial Day Weekend - Dividing Creek (May 24-26, 2008)
Dennis and Suzi Lawrence reported on the Memorial Day Bayfarer Raft Up. Thate Wata anchored across from Grainery Creek as that was the only anchorage remaining in the entire Wye river. Fortunately, there was plenty of room for the raftup there and everyone had a great time. The annual Day of Absurdity was held here and (probably due to the weak competition), Dennis & Suzi won! It's certainly absurd to win if you have no competition - how more appropriate can you get! It was a quiet area which made for a very relaxing time. Especially since the weather was fantastic - for just about the first time this spring. No rain or thunderstorms! Amazing! Last year's drought was over-compensated for by this years record drenchings. Dennis and Suzi will be hanging out on their boat for a few weeks until they move down to their new digs in North Carolina, but we do hope they'll be back occasionally for raftups.

Shaw Bay raftup (Aug 23 - 24, 2008)
As an improptu email-organized get together, the weekend raftup worked out well. It was quite cloudy during the day with spotty showers but only one light sprinkle hit us. But the clouds were very interesting viewing. Especially when Bill was on the phone with Chris O'Neill as Felix was coming down from Kent Narrows toward us, he spotted a funnel cloud descending from a dark cloud band directly in front of Felix, which really wasn't what Chris wanted to happen. Fortunately, it dissipated before anything drastic happened and other subsequent small funnels didn't amount to much either. Later in the evening we had some good star viewing - even the Milky Way was clear and Rick Emerson spotted a meteor.
|
Labor Day Weekend (Aug 30- Sept 1, 2008)
We rafted up in San Domingo Creek (the back door to St Michaels, although only Chris and Rick Emerson actually did the dinghy trip over for a short visit there). Despite earlier concerns, it turned out to be quite nice weather with moderate temperatures. A nice relaxing weekend with some intermissions for fixing various stuff on the boats. (Dennis Lawrence's TV bit the dust) Maggie and Murphy had fun romping on the Island and no one got there feet cut by oyster shells as has happened here in the past. (There were definitely too many sea nettles for swimming) We had a good view at sunset of Venus and Mars on the western horizon. Chris & Suzi had fun practicing kayaking in Sue's kayaks (one inflatable and one regular) as the three explored the anchorage. - And Chris turned out to be the grand winner at Dominos.
|
Oktoberfest and Columbus Day, Rhode River (October 11-13, 2008)
After much consultation on which direction would be best to sail last weekend, we ended up riding to the Rhode River. The weather was unbelievable for October - it felt like summer was still here with strong sunlight in the 80's. Nightingale got there first (we cheated, we motorsailed downwind - was only 1 to 2 knots apparent from behind when moderately motoring downbay.) Felix the cat was next and put the bigger hook in, followed later by One With the Wind, who was delayed while indulging in Taste of Kent Narrows before they left - but they didn't have to tack at all on the way over. Rick Emerson helped out with fixing some obscure electronics problems on Felix but fortunately, their large TV was working just fine, so we checked out some video shots recorded by Bill Schneider the previous week at the Glacier Jazz Stampede in Kalispell, Montana. They were of special interest to Chris O'Neill since she is currently teaching piano as a part time job and the shots were of an absolutely great piano player/comedian from Montreal, Mimi Blais. Magnifique! Tres Bon. You can see her unbelievable stuff at www.mimiblais.com, although the Youtube videos may require a fairly fast connection. We rafted up between High Island and the shore and weren't bothered much by powerboat wakes. High Island stopped much of the occasional wake even though High Island was only above water for a short while at low tide. The Bayfarer ladies did a mutual kayak trip together (Chris, Chris, & Sue) all over the place and had a good time. The guys were fixing things on the boats in the meantime. Later, we were joined by Catnip. We were a bit concerned about how Felix might react to Catnip, but since Andy & Joyce rafted on the other side of Nightingale, we don't think Catnip noticed. We hors d'oeuvred to excess before/instead of dinner and dominoed in the evenings. There was a fantastic fireworks at Camp Letts on Saturday night. It was better and bigger than most July 4th fireworks displays. We don't know for sure why it happened, but most probably it was because someone had heard the Bayfarers would be there. And a great time was had by all.
|
Halloween, Kent Narrows (October 25, 2008)
The updated weather forecast of very strong gusty winds with rain haunted us so we (fortunately, since the forecast turned out to be correct) changed the Halloween raftup from Harness Creek to a sail or drive to the Emerson's One With the Wind in her dock in Kent Narrows. The Taliaferros and Schneiders drysailed across the Bay Bridge and joined Rick & Chris on their boat along with Gunther and Barbara Nehrkorn (from Tseunami) and, for their first ever Bayfarer event, David & Veronica Derby, who are using One With the Wind's old dock space on the other side of Kent Narrows. We had a great time, as the winds and rains howled outside (or was that the Halloween ghosts howling), what with the much more that we could eat food, including Chris's traditional pumpkin soup in a pumpkin, and lots of fun conversation, including some very Halloween-appropriate spooky laughs at political candidates. Much later, closing out the evening, Chris showed us a version of Dominos that Gunther had introduced them to the previous week - and she won the series - no wonder she liked that version? Actually it wasn't bad (I came in second). Anyway, good spirits were had by all. ("Punky Pumpkin is a happy pumpkin, cause he's a Jack-o-lantern and not a pumpkin pie" - Teresa Brewer, et al.)

Turkey Stew, Back Creek (November 15, 2008)
Our late fall schedule seems to have been a good prediction of bad sailing weather. This time it was gusts of 30 to 40 mph with periods of heavy rains and even a tornado warning. Freeflight and Nightingale stayed at their docks and the skippers and crew plus a few others rafted up in Jerry & Roanna's place on Back Creek. No one had found any of the traditional Dinty Moore Stew in their bilges to use so we pigged out on conventional food instead. It was a good decision in retrospect since, although we didn't see any tornados, it would have been very uncomfortable (and wet) on the water and we might not have been able to get back to the docks on Sunday since the wind blew a lot of the water out of the western shore. - And the food was great and we had a great time. - And the skipper and crew of One with the Wind (they drove down there) were rafted up in the living room of the new home of the skipper and crew of Thata Wata in North Carolina also having a great time. However, the tornados actually did show up in North Carolina and we hope they stayed away from Thata Wata et al.

Raftup Reports for 2007: Memorial Day Weekend - Wye Island area (May 26-28, 2007)
Dennis put his new Spade hook down in Dividing Creek and it held well, first with just himself and then with Rick & Chris, and later with Val, Jane, and Brian. The creek was full of cats, e.g. a Gemini cat gathering but we didn't notice too much meowing. Felix, the cat (the O'Neills) anchored near by, at the mouth of the creek. There was the usual visiting back and forth, with snacks, etc. in Thate Wata. Sunday was a repeat of Saturday, less the sailing into the Wye and concluded with a round of "full contact dominoes" with everyone winning at least once. Weather-wise, we were lucky. Saturday evening's storm that drenched Annapolis, passed by to the north and was basically a non-event in the Dividing Creek area. Sunday evening it rained a bit, the "son et lumiare" show was more vivid, and the wind came up a bit but, overall, it was mostly an interruption in the late afternoon/evening.
|
Labor Day Weekend (Aug 31- Sept 3)
We had the right Felix at the raftup. Felix the catamaran (Chris & Dave O'Neill) was the one at this weekend's raftup - most fortunately. Far better than Category 5 hurricane Felix that was cruising in the Caribbean! This was a last minute get-together. Friday afternoon Nightingale rafted up to Felix the Cat (main crewmember, Bequie the dog) in Swan Creek and were joined shortly by Kathy & Mike Anderson in Daze Off. We rode into a marina (Harbor Haven?) in Dave's high powered motorboat/dinghy and were treated to the top of 3 decks with a great private view for the 6 of us. The next day, after much discussion, we flew down (and up) to the mouth of Emery Creek, where it was so nice we stayed there for the next two days. We were joined by Chris & Rick Emerson - they had tried to sail One With The Wind south but the nice breeze kept quitting at strategic moments, which made One With the Wind very mad and the boat said "Enough is enough, I'm going North for a boat Party!". A bit later, Val & Jane Taliaferro blew in and rafted FreeFlight up with us. What can I say? We partied, and relaxed, and partied and relaxed. Daze Off & Felix introduced us to the card game Crazy Rummy, and Nightingale, One with the Wind, & FreeFlight introduced them to Dominoes (Bayfarer version). Great hors d'oeuvres were offered by all - although Chris O'Neill insisted her mango fruit salsa would have been better if she had remembered to bring the cilantro which was on their dock. Dave & Bequie spend a bit of time on the beaches but weren't able to find any ripe cilantro plants to pick. Fortunately, her salsa seemed just great to us as it was. - and a good time was had by all. (Oh, this may be classified information, but we celebrated Sue's birthday on Sunday - see the pictures of everyone on Nightingale)

Oktoberfest in the Wye Oct 6 - 8)
We were pleasantly surprised that, on the busy weekend, there was actually room to raftup in Dividing Creek in the first cove to starboard with some protection from the Wye River powerboat wakes. Nightingale was slowed up at the Kent Narrows Bridge which was a bit off schedule due to a sailboat running into it shortly before (the boat, with some scarring on the hull, was heading north into the Chester as we were arriving). Rick identified the boat as being from their marina. -And then Nightingale's motor quit in the Miles - luckily it didn't happen while waiting for the bridge - it took awhile to finally find a plugged fuel line at the tank as the problem - so we were a bit late getting there. We had a good Oktoberfest (Eins, Zwei, g'suffa!) and we had a Day of Absurdity Oktoberfest quiz (continued at the following raftup). Val just edged out Rick by half a point, followed by a tie for third between Suzi Lawrence and Sue Schneider. Nice clear nights and we had a great overhead passing view of the International Space Station.

Halloween Postponed to Nov 3-4 from Oct 27-28 due to the weather
The original date on Halloween weekend was blown out by the one of the first windy/rainy days we had all summer - the rain was much appreciated because of the draught, but not so good - especially the winds - for getting to Harness Creek. Then, on the following weekend, Nov 3-4, one of the few Atlantic hurricanes this year, Noel, passed by offshore and sucked in lots of wind on Friday and Saturday so Schneider, Lawrences, & Taliferros just drove over to Kent Narrows to party on Rick & Chris's boat at Mears marina, joined by a number of their marina friends. The breeze did tend to blow stuff of the table in the Pavilion there, but it was easier to recover it than it would have been from the boats - and we managed to go a good job on the pumpkin soup, pumpkin bread, pumpkin dip, pear crisp dessert, and lots more. At least, the winds blew out the clouds so that Comet Holmes overhead was able to check us out - "Elementary, my dear Watson, it just looks like those Bayfarers party animals on One With The Wind. Nothing to worry about!"

Raftup Reports for 2006: Memorial Day Weekend - Dividing Creek on the Wye (May 27-29, 2006)
Nightingale arrived the night before and staked out a deep-water spot in Dividing Creek. Dennis & Val had a good sail in a brisk breeze up Eastern Bay through the Annapolis -St Michael's regatta racing fleet, reportedly leaving Donnybrook in their wake - although maybe it was the other way around. Freeflight, One with the Wind, and Thate Wata were joined by Tseunami and Impulse - who are docked at Kent Narrows with One with the Wind. The highlight of the weekend was a christening ceremony for Thate Wata, Dennis & Suzi Lawrence's new boat - a Catalina 42. Rick recited the formal verse while Dennis & Suzi popped champaign corks North, South, East, & West. The toasts ensured the proper welcoming of the new boat to the fleet. Thate Wata seemed to be enjoying it's ceremony - definitely a very spoiled boat. Procyon (Procy for short - named after the little dog star), Nightingale's new golden retriever puppy also enjoyed his first cruise, along with Jack, Karl Schneider's large golden retriever. Maggie and Murphy on Thate Wata completed the dog picture - all had a great time on the beaches - especially sniffing the many horseshoe crabs crawling up on the beaches.

San Domingo Creek/St Michaels (July 4th weekend)
Following some independent cruising we met for a long July 4th weekend in San Domingo Creek, the back door to St Michaels. We had Rick & Chris who were well relaxed from messing around on the Choptank the previous week as St Michael's tour experts. We anchored separately in the cove at San Domingo and took the dinghies into the south dock at St Michaels for a nice walk into town. The weather couldn't have been nicer. We hiked & hiked & hiked around town. I think we explored most all of the many stores. The ice cream shop had no fat/no sugar moose ice cream advertised which was an irresistable offer. And it tasted great! Come evening, we wandered over to the waterfront/museum area where we enjoyed some very nice fireworks and some good music. The big band even played "Sailing Down the Chesapeake Bay"! However, we did then have to lug all the stuff we (some of us) bought back to the dinghys. Later, we dinghied over to Thate Wata for some socializing. We noticed a Maryland Marine Police cruiser checking out the many boats in the anchorage and it wandered by us asking who belonged to Nightingale since no one was on board. They seems reassured when they found we were with the group. They said they were going to be there all night and, indeed, they seemed to be anchored out at least until we retired for the night. We have some speculation on why they were there but don't want them mad at us if we guessed the reason wrong so we won't post it here on the internet.

Mini-Cruise - South River to Wye River August 19 - Labor Day weekend
FreeFlight and Nightingale had a great initial week cruising short distances and goofing off doing as little as possible so we were well primed for a great imprompto raftup with the Emersons, Stefanciks, Laurences, and some trawler/diving friends of Rick & Chris in Dividing Creek the weekend of Aug 26-27. Andy & Joyce were out for the following week and went down to check out St Michaels on Monday. FreeFlight and Nightingale had already done that for the previous week so we just hung around and fixed stuff on the boats. Val & Jane's big project (a never-ending one) was to constantly reglue the Bayfarer seanettle pool which really wasn't made too well to begin with. The sea nettles were very thick in St Michaels, Leeds Creek, and Dividing Creek. However, Nightingale checked out Pickering Creek since it hadn't been there for awhile and - surprise!- almost no sea nettles (and plenty of water doing the "S" turn around the points into and out of the creek). We all were planning on staying out through Labor Day weekend, but perhaps we listened once too often to the weather forcasts and we decided to head back to wait out Ernesto at home. A good move, it turned out.

Octoberfest and Orionids at Dividing CreekOctober 21-22
This Duck in at Dividing Creek was dominated by the dogs (of course) Jack, Procy, Maggie, and Murphy had many fun beach excursions. Dennis's favorite dog beach on the south side of the Wye had an imposingly large American Persimmon tree loaded with ripe persimmons. The raftup featured some Octoberfest music and we even drank a little bit of German beer. The highlight of the evening, however, was a spectacular meteor that Rick & Bill spotted - it streaked (although we don't know if it had its clothes on or not) from low in the east all the way overhead to the west. Definitely one to remember.
